COVID-19 Pandemic: Wimbledon Cancelled!

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

This year’s Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships, due to start on 29 June 2020, have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The first time since the Second World War. Even playing them this year without spectators has been formally ruled out.

The organisers of this prestigious international sporting event have taken out appropriate insurance against cancellation, following the ‘MERS’ Pandemic of 2012.

Their claim is expected to run into more than £200 million in respect of refunds to be paid to ticket holders, broadcasters and sponsors.

However, this will not compensate the fans.

Incidentally, the vast number of strawberries, a feature of Wimbledon, expected to be consumed by the fans during the event, of the order of 28,000 kg, will be sold elsewhere and the surplus donated to a London Food Bank!
