UK Sport has announced new funding plans of £352 million for the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.
The investment will be in sports that reflect modern British Society and seven new sports will be included in this programme.
- Table Tennis; and
Climbing, Skateboarding and Surfing are new additions to the Olympic Programme.
Some traditional sports, such as sailing and equestrianism, which are often considered as ‘posh’ sports, will have their funding cut.
UK Sport CEO, Sally Munday, has remarked as follows:
“Today’s decisions signal our future ambitions to broaden the areas in which we achieve global success and deepening our societal impact.”
“This means supporting more sports …. so we better reflect the diversity of the country we represent.”
An additional new fund, amounting to £3 million, will be open to applications for financial assistance from other sports, such as ‘breaking’ (see the Post of 8 December 2020 on the SLT website by Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw), which will feature for the first time in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games.
