Tokyo Olympics: Organising Committee President’s Remarks on Women!

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

Sexist remarks about women, made by the President of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, Joshiro Mori, have caused furore and led to calls for him to resign.

He is reported as saying that women speak too much and their time in meetings should be limited. He made these remarks, which have been condemned as “absolutely inappropriate” by the International Olympic Committee, in relation to a proposal made last week for increasing the number of female members on the Japanese Olympic Committee.

The 83-year-old has been called on to resign and there will be a special executive committee meeting of the Japanese Olympic Committee to discuss the matter and decide whether he should resign or not.

Mori is an influential figure in the Liberal Democratic Party, which has ruled Japan for the last seven decades and whose track record on gender politics is reputedly bad.

Under the Olympic Charter, any form of discrimination, including discrimination on the grounds of gender, is forbidden.

These remarks come at a time when, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the organisation and holding of the postponed 2020 Games continue to be under some pressure!
