Tokyo Olympics: Latest News

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

Because of continuing concerns about the incidence of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Japan and elsewhere, it has been announced that no international fans will be allowed to attend the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympics Games.

The Olympic Games are due to begin on 23 July and the Paralympic Games are due to begin one month later, on 24 August.

The Organisers stated that the “challenging” COVID-19 situation in Japan and many other countries around the world, as well as global travel restrictions, combined with the emergence of variant strains of the virus, had led to this decision.

The International Olympic Committee, in confirming that the Games would go ahead, has promised that the Games would, as a top priority, be safe and secure for the participants.

Ticket holders for the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games will be refunded.

It is the first time in the history of the Games of the modern era that they have been postponed.
